How We Started

A Dorm Room Idea That Grew Into a Movement

It started when final-year scholars tried to sell their old textbooks before graduating. They posted on WhatsApp groups, got buried in noise, and eventually gave the books away for free out of frustration.

That weekend, the idea took shape: a dedicated, trusted space for university commerce. No strangers, no spam — just scholars helping scholars.

Within three months of launching, over 800 scholars had signed up. Within a year, UniTrade Ghana had processed more than GH₵ 500,000 in university trades. Today, it's the go-to platform for everything from textbooks to tech, services to furniture — all within the university gates.

We didn't set out to build a startup. We just wanted scholars to stop losing money when they graduated. Turns out, we weren't alone.

The Idea

Two frustrated final-year scholars sketch the concept of a university-only exchange after a failed attempt to sell textbooks via WhatsApp groups.

Mar '24

First Launch

UniTrade Ghana launches in beta to 50 hand-picked scholars. First transaction: a used mechanical engineering textbook sold for GH₵ 40.

Jun '24

800 Scholars & Counting

Word-of-mouth drives organic growth. The platform hits 800 registered users and processes its first GH₵ 100,000 in transactions.

Oct '24

Services & Escrow

We launch the Services category and a secure escrow payment system, expanding beyond physical goods to tutoring, design, and university delivery.

Jan '25

University Recognition

The university officially endorses UniTrade Ghana as a supported scholar initiative and integrates it into the scholar onboarding pack.

Mar '26

Today — 5,000+ Strong

5,000+ registered scholars, GH₵ 2M+ in value traded, and a full team of scholar developers and operators. The mission continues.
